Considered to be a cure-all by the ancient Greeks, sideritis tea is still used to combat cold and flu by their modern counterparts.
What is Sideritis Scardica?
Sideritis scardica is a specific strain of sideritis, a flowering plant that grows wild on the mountains of Greece as well as parts of the Balkans.
The name “sideritis” roughly translates to “he who is made of iron”, which is where the name ironwort comes from. Legend has it that this name derives from ancient Greece, where sideritis was used to treat wounds caused by iron weapons, but it may also refer to the spear-like shape of the flowers.
In the English-speaking world, Greek mountain tea is more commonly used, but it is also known as shepherd’s tea or simply Greek tea.
