Description

Sideritis scardica is consumed throughout Greece and it has been prized for its medicinal properties since ancient times. It has been used in the treatment of everything from colds and flu, to digestive distress and anxiety.

Also known as “Greek mountain tea” and “Ironwort”, sideritis is a panacea with recognised anti-inflammatory, anti-microbial and anti-oxidant capabilities. In recent years researchers have discovered that it could be effective at improving learning capacity and cognitive function, while potentially reducing neurological deterioration and joint inflammation.

As a result, there are suggestions that regular consumption of sideritis scardica could be used to reduce the risk of conditions such as Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s.

Flavours that Complement Sideritis Scardica

Sideritis is great on its own. It’s not always easy to convince the black tea-loving British public that a herbal tea tastes great, but this one really does. It lacks the bitterness of some varieties of green tea, it is stronger and more intense than camomile, and it’s not overly sweet and sickly like some flower and fruit teas.

It can and should be enjoyed for its flavour, and not just its health benefits. There is no need to cover-up the taste. However, if you want to experiment by adding other teas and creating your own blend, try some of the following:

  • Lemon Verbena: This herb is used as a flavouring throughout Greece and South America. It adds a fresh burst of citrus to yoghurts, beverages and marinades, and a sprinkle of dried lemon verbena leaf could make your sideritis even more delicious. It’s not part of our range just yet, but you can find it in our Revive Tea Gift Pack (see here) along with sideritis and sage.
Nettle and/or Dandelion: Dandelion and nettle are potent anti-inflammatories and can boost the anti-inflammatory effects of sideritis. We currently sell both of these teas as part of our limited edition range. Click here for our dandelion and click here for our nettle.
  • Lemon Balm: We don’t sell this one yet but it can go well with sideritis scardica. The taste is similar to lemon verbena, and it is also said to aid with digestion.
  • Honey: Sideritis goes great with a high quality honey. Try a dollop of orange blossom honey to add a sweet citrus tang; Greek thyme to add more antioxidants and a more intense flavor; or your average store-bought honey. It goes great with most varieties, although we find that dark forest honey and other equally pungent varieties overpower the tea.
